Asbestos exposure is a sensitive topic for most parents. The risk of exposure to the deadly cancer causing, now defunct building material will always be there. As a parent, you have to beware of the risks of exposure, and do whatever it takes to protect your child’s future 20-50 years down the line.
Just because asbestos use is banned by the UK law, it would be easy for one to ensure that their child is not exposed to deadly asbestos fibers, right? Research has shown that this isn’t entirely true; children are exposed to the deadly fibers all the time leading to fatal cancers later in life.

The following are some of the ways you can use to ensure that your child is not exposed to asbestos fibers in their school.

Take Them To A School That Actively Enforces An Asbestos Free Environment

How concerned about asbestos is your child’s school? The Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 puts the responsibility for creating an asbestos free environment for students to the owners of the school. If you are searching for a school (for your child), ensure that you have selected a school with an actively defended asbestos policy. This not only ensures the safety of your child, it also ensures that action is taken by the relevant parties.

Understand The History Of The School Land

Research has shown that asbestos particles can stay grounded for years. What is the location of the school? Is it near go downs or dilapidated asbestos factories? By studying the location of your child’s school, you can be able to report a risky school to the authorities. If a school is on land that was filled with asbestos, do they have a clean bill of health from the borough inspectorate? Doing this ensures that your child is protected from side-effects of asbestos exposure such as mesothelioma.

Use Common Sense

This may sound harsh but keeping your eyes open is the best way to ensure that your child does not end up in an asbestos filled environment. Truth is, going for schools that walk the talk and getting government clearance are good; but don’t let these limit your judgment. If for whatever reason, you suspect that a school is not forthcoming with their asbestos free reports, don’t take your child there. Report the matter to law enforcement to not only protect your child from exposure, but others as well.
